New mortgage lending in Australia rose in 2026 Q2. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the value of new mortgage lending was AUD 99,012,900,000 in the quarter, compared with AUD 92,836,400,000 in 2026 Q1. Housing Market Group calculates this as an increase of 6.7% on the previous quarter, based on the bureau's figures.
The annual comparison points in the same direction. In 2025 Q2, new mortgage lending stood at AUD 92,895,900,000, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Measured against that figure, lending in 2026 Q2 was 6.6% higher, by HMG's calculation from the bureau's data. The quarterly and annual rates of growth were therefore close to each other in the latest period.
Looking at the quarters in between gives a fuller picture of how lending has moved over the past year. The Australian Bureau of Statistics recorded AUD 98,669,600,000 in new mortgage lending in 2025 Q3, followed by AUD 115,167,300,000 in 2025 Q4. Lending then fell back to AUD 92,836,400,000 in 2026 Q1, a level slightly below the 2025 Q2 figure, before recovering in 2026 Q2. The 2025 Q4 value remains the highest in this series of figures, and the 2026 Q2 total sits below it.
The 2026 Q2 figure of AUD 99,012,900,000 is also a little above the 2025 Q3 value of AUD 98,669,600,000. Taken together, the bureau's numbers show that lending in 2026 Q2 returned to roughly the range seen in 2025 Q3, after the strong 2025 Q4 result and the weaker start to 2026. The figures do not on their own explain what drove these movements, and the pattern from one quarter to the next has been uneven rather than steady.
In summary, the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics data show new mortgage lending in Australia growing both on the quarter and on the year in 2026 Q2. HMG's calculations put the rise at 6.7% compared with 2026 Q1 and 6.6% compared with 2025 Q2. The sheet available for this article does not include comparisons with other countries, a breakdown by state or city, or Housing Market Group's own platform data on search demand and listings, so those angles are not covered here.
