New mortgage lending in Germany reached EUR 18,995,000,000 in September 2026, according to the Deutsche Bundesbank. The figure covers new housing loans agreed during the month and indicates how much fresh credit households took on to buy or build homes.
The September total was higher than the month before. In August 2026 new lending stood at EUR 17,891,000,000, according to the Bundesbank. Housing Market Group calculates that this is a rise of 6.2% from August to September, based on the central bank's figures.
Compared with a year earlier, the change was small. The Bundesbank recorded new mortgage lending of EUR 18,834,000,000 in September 2025. HMG calculates that the September 2026 figure is 0.9% higher than that level, so lending volumes in the latest month were broadly in line with the same month of the previous year.
The monthly series over the summer was uneven. In May 2026 new lending was EUR 17,219,000,000, before rising to EUR 19,782,000,000 in June 2026 and EUR 21,675,000,000 in July 2026, according to the Bundesbank. Lending then fell back to the August level before recovering in September. The September 2026 figure remained below the totals for June and July but above those for May and August.
Taken together, the Bundesbank data show that September 2026 brought a rebound from a weaker August without returning to the higher volumes seen at the start of the summer. Monthly mortgage figures can move with the timing of loan agreements, so a single month says little on its own. Set against September 2025, however, the latest total points to new lending activity that was close to its level of a year earlier. The figures do not include a regional breakdown within Germany or comparable data for other countries, so this article does not compare German lending with other markets or with individual states.
