Single-family housing completions in the United States came to 70,000 in September 2026, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The figure was lower than in August 2026, when the bureau recorded 75,600 completions, and Housing Market Group calculates that this represents a fall of 7.4% from one month to the next.
The September 2026 reading continues a downward run that began after the early summer. Completions stood at 75,100 in May 2026 before rising to 81,300 in June 2026, the highest monthly figure in the data available here. They then eased to 79,900 in July 2026 and to 75,600 in August 2026, before falling again in September. As a result, the September 2026 total sits below every other month shown in the series from May 2026 onward, including the May level that preceded the June peak.
The comparison with a year earlier points the same way. In September 2025, the U.S. Census Bureau counted 78,700 single-family completions. Set against the 70,000 recorded in September 2026, that amounts to a decline of 11.1% over the year, based on HMG's calculation from the bureau's figures. The annual comparison is useful because it matches the same month in each year, which helps separate the broader direction of the figures from changes that can occur over the course of a single year.
Taken together, the monthly and annual changes show that the number of newly finished single-family homes in the United States was lower in September 2026 than in both the preceding month and the same month of 2025. The month-on-month decline of 7.4% was smaller than the year-on-year decline of 11.1%, suggesting that the September 2026 figure is part of a wider slowdown in completions rather than a one-off movement relative to August.
Completions measure homes that have reached the end of the construction process, so they reflect building activity that started earlier rather than decisions made in the month itself. The figures here cover single-family properties only and refer to the United States as a whole. The fact sheet used for this article does not include data for other property types, other countries, individual regions or states, or Housing Market Group's own platform measures such as search demand and listings, so no comparison with those can be drawn from this release.
